In
comparison with its 1964 performance at Tokyo, the United
States men's track and field team did very well in Mexico
City. Not only did the the team equal the 1964 output of 12
golds and five silvers, but it garnered seven bronzes, a
gain of four, medals in all, while participating strongly in
the competitions which saw Olympic records tumble in 17 of
the 24 events. Only in the long distance running and walking
events, and in the grueling decathlon test, did the Olympic
record book escape revision. It was the greatest assault on
standards the Games have experienced.
The USA repeated in nine
title defenses against the world's best and regained three
more crowns, albeit relinquishing superiority in three other
classifications. The sprints, 100, 200 and 400 meters, along
with both relays, again were won in smashing style. Success
continued in the pole vault, discus throw, shot put, and the
110 meter hurdles... a pretty good exchange for unsuccessful
title defenses in the 400 meter hurdles, 5,000 and 10,000
meter runs.
All USA winners were
outstanding in probably the best entry fields ever drawn tom
the Games, with Al Oerter's fourth straight Olympic gold
medal triumph in the discus throw and young Bob Beamon's
astounding long jump performance providing the most
extraordinary moments.
